Job Description

The Head of Operations at Malta International Airport plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of terminal operations and aerodrome services. This position requires strong leadership skills, excellent coordination abilities, and a deep understanding of airport operations and regulatory compliance. The incumbent will oversee two crucial teams: the Terminal Operations team and the Aerodrome Services team. The primary responsibilities include optimizing airport facilities, coordinating with various stakeholders, ensuring compliance with internal procedures and EASA regulations, and maintaining aerodrome safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Team Management:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Terminal Operations and Aerodrome Services teams;
  • Foster a culture of safety, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the teams;
  • Recruit, train, and develop team members to ensure a high level of competence and performance;
  • Set performance objectives, conduct performance evaluations, and provide developmental opportunities.

Terminal Operations Management:

  • Allocate and optimize airport facilities to ensure a seamless experience for passengers and airlines;
  • Coordinate and manage the relationship with third-party service providers, including ground-handling service providers, internal departments, and airlines;
  • Allocate, optimise, and monitor the use of airport resources, such as check-in desks, gate assignments, aircraft parking stands, and other resources as per operational requirements;
  • Monitor, optimise and analyze operational performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.

Aerodrome Services:

  • Manage airfield operations to ensure all aspects of the airport’s safety management systems are effective and adhered to;
  • Ensure adequate systems, procedures and resources for the proper functioning of a safe aerodrome area are always in place;
  • Ensure that EASA/ICAO Aerodrome certification requirements are always met and that the aerodrome operates in accordance with license conditions and statutory requirements;
  • Oversee regular inspections of the aerodrome to identify and address safety hazards or non-compliance issues;
  • Issue and manage Airfield Driving, Marshalling and Towing Permits in accordance with established procedures and safety standards;
  • Collaborate with regulatory authorities and stakeholders to address compliance issues and implement corrective actions as/when necessary;
  • Ensure the effective management of the Wildlife Hazard Control Plan and Wildlife Strike Risk Management Plan (WSRMP).

Risk Management and Safety:

  • Identify potential risks and hazards related to terminal operations and aerodrome services and develop mitigation strategies;
  • Implement safety management systems and protocols to maintain a safe working environment for employees and stakeholders;
  • Conduct periodic safety audits and reviews to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Act as a key liaison between Malta International Airport and various stakeholders, including airlines, regulatory agencies (local amp; foreign), government authorities, and service providers;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to address operational challenges, resolve issues, and improve service delivery;
  • Represent Malta International Airport in meetings, forums, and industry events related to terminal operations and aerodrome services.

Budget Management:

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring cost-effective operations and value for money;
  • Allocate resources efficiently to achieve departmental and organizational goals.

Interdepartmental Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with other departments, particularly the Operations Continuity amp; Customer Experience Department to align strategies and achieve overall airport strategic objectives.

General Duties:

  • To conform with the Occupational Health amp; Safety Authority Act, ACT XXVII of 2000 and all subsidiary legislations;
  • To perform any other duties and/or related tasks as may be designated by the Company from time to time.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior managerial role;
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or equivalent;
  • Whilst directly relevant industry experience would be an asset, it is not a requirement.
